    O potencial de propagação da Covid-19 e a tomada de decisão governamental: uma análise retrospectiva em Florianópolis, Brasil

    Objective: to analyze the association between the spreading potential of SARS-CoV-2 and the decision-making of the municipal government of Florianópolis (Brazil) regarding social distance. Methods: We analyzed new cases of COVID-19 with nowcasting treatment identified in Florianópolis residents between February 1 and July 14, 2020. Decrees related to COVID-19 published in the Official Gazette of the Municipality between February 1 and July 14, 2020 were also analyzed. Based on the actions proposed in the decrees, it was analyzed whether they relaxed social isolation, increased or maintained existing restrictions, thus creating the Social Distancing Index. Time-dependent reproduction numbers (Rt) for the period of 14 days prior to each decree were calculated. A matrix was constructed associating the classification of each decree and the Rt values, analyzing the consonance or dissonance between the potential dissemination of SARS-CoV-2 and the actions of the decrees. Results: 5,374 cases of COVID-19 and 26 decrees were analyzed. Nine decrees increased measures of social distance, nine maintained them and eight made them more flexible. Of the 26 actions, 9 were consonant and 17 dissonant with the tendency indicated by the Rt. Dissonances were observed in all the decrees that maintained the distance measures or made them more flexible. In the last two months analyzed there was the fastest expansion in the number of new cases and the greatest amount of dissonant decrees. Conclusion: There was an important divergence between municipal measures of social distance with epidemiological indicators at the time of each political decision.   Key-words: Coronavirus Infections. Métodos: Foram analisados casos novos de COVID-19 com tratamento de nowcasting identificados em residentes de Florianópolis entre 01 de fevereiro e 14 de julho de 2020. Também foram analisados os decretos relacionados à COVID-19 publicadas no Diário Oficial do Município entre 01 de fevereiro e 14 de julho de 2020. Com base nas ações dispostas nos decretos, analisou-se se elas promoviam o relaxamento, o aumento ou a manutenção das restrições vigestes, criando-se o Índice de Distanciamento Social. Para o período de cinco dias anteriores a cada decreto calcularam-se os números de reprodução dependente do tempo (Rt). Construiu-se matriz entre a classificação de cada decreto e os valores de Rt, verificando-se a consonância ou a dissonância entre o potencial de disseminação do SARS-CoV-2 e as ações dos decretos. Resultados: Foram analisados 5.374 casos de COVID-19 e 26 decretos. Nove decretos aumentaram as medidas de distanciamento social, nove mantiveram e oito as flexibilizaram. Das 26 ações, 9 eram consonantes e 17 dissonantes com a tendência indicada pelos Rt. Dissonâncias foram observadas com todos os decretos que mantiveram as medidas de distanciamento e que as flexibilizavam. No segundo bimestre da análise houve a mais rápida expansão do número de casos novos e a maior quantidade de dissonâncias dos decretos. Conclusão: Observou-se importante divergência entre as medidas de distanciamento social com indicadores epidemiológicos no momento da decisão política

    Towards an applied metaecology

    The complexity of ecological systems is a major challenge for practitioners and decision-makers who work to avoid, mitigate and manage environmental change. Here, we illustrate how metaecology - the study of spatial interdependencies among ecological systems through fluxes of organisms, energy, and matter - can enhance understanding and improve managing environmental change at multiple spatial scales. We present several case studies illustrating how the framework has leveraged decision-making in conservation, restoration and risk management. Nevertheless, an explicit incorporation of metaecology is still uncommon in the applied ecology literature, and in action guidelines addressing environmental change. This is unfortunate because the many facets of environmental change can be framed as modifying spatial context, connectedness and dominant regulating processes - the defining features of metaecological systems. Narrowing the gap between theory and practice will require incorporating system-specific realism in otherwise predominantly conceptual studies, as well as deliberately studying scenarios of environmental change.     Comparing assemblages of Asteraceae and their insect herbivores under different land-use regimens

Our objective was to study the effects of alterations in the natural landscape on the species composition and structure of assemblages of Asteraceae and their endophagous insects through comparisons between cerrado (savanna), pastures and Eucalyptus stands. We first investigated whether similarities between assemblages of Asteraceae and their insects varied among land uses or localities. Secondly, we asked whether assemblages of Eucalyptus stands and pastures are subsets of those within the cerrado. We sampled within randomly deployed transects in 15 areas. Land use was found to be an important factor in determining plant composition similarity; however, locality did not exert any significant influence. Pastures were less similar to one another, suggesting high beta diversity. Similarities among insect assemblages were correlated with plant assemblage composition, but not with land use or locality. Species of Tephritidae were distributed along localities independently of land use. High beta diversity in Asteraceae assemblages among cerrados and pastures was supported by nestedness analysis. Plant assemblages in Eucalyptus stands were subsets of cerrado, but pasture assemblages were only partial subsets. A higher degree of nestedness in insect assemblages than in plant assemblages indicated lower beta diversity within these herbivores. Our data indicate that many herbivores are specialized on widely distributed plant genera. Conservation of Asteraceae species and their flower head insects depends not only on maintenance of landscape fragments but also on the correct matching of management form and land use.     A meta-analysis of plant facilitation in coastal dune systems: responses, regions, and research gaps

    Empirical studies in salt marshes, arid, and alpine systems support the hypothesis that facilitation between plants is an important ecological process in severe or 'stressful' environments. Coastal dunes are both abiotically stressful and frequently disturbed systems. Facilitation has been documented, but the evidence to date has not been synthesized. We did a systematic review with meta-analysis to highlight general research gaps in the study of plant interactions in coastal dunes and examine if regional and local factors influence the magnitude of facilitation in these systems. the 32 studies included in the systematic review were done in coastal dunes located in 13 countries around the world but the majority was in the temperate zone (63%). Most of the studies adopt only an observational approach to make inferences about facilitative interactions, whereas only 28% of the studies used both observational and experimental approaches. Among the factors we tested, only geographic region mediates the occurrence of facilitation more broadly in coastal dune systems. the presence of a neighbor positively influenced growth and survival in the tropics, whereas in temperate and subartic regions the effect was neutral for both response variables. We found no evidence that climatic and local factors, such as life-form and life stage of interacting plants, affect the magnitude of facilitation in coastal dunes. Overall, conclusions about plant facilitation in coastal dunes depend on the response variable measured and, more broadly, on the geographic region examined. However, the high variability and the limited number of studies, especially in tropical region, indicate we need to be cautious in the generalization of the conclusions. Anyway, coastal dunes provide an important means to explore topical issues in facilitation research including context dependency, local versus regional drivers of community structure, and the importance of gradients in shaping the outcome of net interactions

    Habitat split and the global decline of amphibians

    The worldwide decline in amphibians has been attributed to several causes, especially habitat loss and disease. We identified a further factor, namely habitat split- defined as human- induced disconnection between habitats used by different life history stages of a species- which forces forest- associated amphibians with aquatic larvae to make risky breeding migrations between suitable aquatic and terrestrial habitats. In the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, we found that habitat split negatively affects the richness of species with aquatic larvae but not the richness of species with terrestrial development ( the latter can complete their life cycle inside forest remnants). This mechanism helps to explain why species with aquatic larvae have the highest incidence of population decline. These findings reinforce the need for the conservation and restoration of riparian vegetation

    Phylogenetic group distribution among Escherichia coli isolated from rivers in Sao Paulo State, Brazil

    The phylogenetic group distribution of Escherichia coli strains isolated from the Sorocaba and Jaguari Rivers located in the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, is described. E. coli strains from group D were found in both rivers while one strain from group B2 was isolated from the Sorocaba river. These two groups often include strains that can cause extraintestinal diseases. Most of the strains analyzed were allocated into the phylogenetic groups A and B1, supporting the hypothesis that strains from these phylogenetic groups are more abundant in tropical areas. Though both rivers are located in urbanized and industrialized areas where the main source of water pollution is considered to derive from domestic sewage, our results suggest that the major sources of contamination in the sampling sites of both rivers might have originated from animals and not humans
